Quick... think of a song or a quote!
Now, be honest... did that song or quote glorify God? If we were to be totally honest, more times than less we would have jingles from television commercials, secular songs from the radio, or quotes from a book or magazine in the forefront of our minds.
Older translations, Like the American Standard Version and the King James Version, translate the first part of Proverbs 23:7 something like this: "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he..." The proverb is about a stingy many who is inviting you to eat, he is asking you to eat, but in his heart he doesn't want you to.
Although we have been taught that actions speak louder than words, the Bible seems to be saying thoughts tell God who you are, not your actions!
4 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. (James 4:1-3)The things we think about have a profound impact on our lives.
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in seasonand whose leaf does not wither - whatever they do prospers. (Psalm 1:1-3)
This week, let us struggle to meditate on the word of God and see how that impacts our lives.
